The Lenny Face has an interesting history, commonly known for being mischievous or up to no good. Which Lenny represents your current mood?

The Original Lenny Face

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

This is the classic Lenny face that you’ve seen take over online from Snapchat to WhatsApp to Facebook this is the face that started it all.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: These are the old schoolers, the people who want to stick with the original. They are the ones that go to Chic Fil A and order the original chicken sandwich and nothing else.

Lenny Face with Middle Finger

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)╭∩╮

Feeling a bit angry or want to flip off a friend on a whim, this variation adds a bit of humor and just a dash of insult.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: These guys/girls want to be as cool as Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy but the truth is, we all know how this machine works and we’re greasing up the gears.

Sad Lenny Face

( ͡ಥ ͜ʖ ͡ಥ)

Either you feel the need to cry or just want someone to cry on your behalf, this sad Lenny will take up the calling and be the bearer of the sad.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: Sometimes you’re sad, sometimes you’re faking like you’re sad. This could either be I’m 13 years old and sad I don’t get to go to the movies with my friends on a Saturday night or I’m 35 and sad I need to put clothes on, stop watching Netflix and go out with friends.

Shrug Lenny Face

乁( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ㄏ

You could type idk but that’s a bit played out and this is a lot more fun anyway. Just shrug it off and move on.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: Well, part of me just wants to shrug here and wonder.  This is a bit fancier than just saying “dunno.”

The Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan’s three-point explosion in Game 1 of the 1992 NBA Finals against Portland is easily one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen. As he made his sixth straight, he winked directly at Mike Fratello and me in the broadcast booth and held his palms up in a shrug, as if to say, “What can I do?” -- Michael Jordan

Blushing Lenny Face

(˵ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°˵)

Did someone call you cute? Well, this is a perfect Lenny, blush a little. After all, the person on the other end of the chat can’t actually see your facial expression and are probably hoping it’s not disgust.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: I’m not blushing, you are! This is perfect when someone gives you that small yet significant compliment. “I like your earrings” when you just got them from your new crush (blush).

Winking Lenny Face

( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

Feeling flirty, throw in a winking Lenny and let the other person you’re texting know that you’re having fun with the conversation.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: Flirting isn’t always in what you say, oftentimes it’s in what you do. A sly smile or a wink is all you need. James Franko knows what’s up.

Le Blob Lenny Face

༼ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ༽

Here’s one of our favorites, what we call “Le Blob” Lenny. Everything’s the same except for the outlines of his face, a bit like Jabba the Hutt in emoji form.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: I’m not saying you’re a blob, but sometimes you feel like a blob. As in, after just eating a large pizza, washing it down with a cold beer and an ice cream sandwich to top it off.

Angry Lenny Face

( ͡° ʖ̯ ͡°)

He’s not super angry, just a bit pissed. Maybe someone poked fun of you or you’re angry about the amount of schoolwork you have to do.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: This isn’t as angry as it gets, just a slight pouty face. You have to work a bit longer until it’s the weekend, this is the perfect Lenny.

Happy Lenny Face

( ͡ ͜ʖ ͡ )

Everyone knows that face when you’re so happy your entire face scrunches up into a little flat play-doh ball. If you’re using this Lenny you’re having a great day.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: This smiley face Lenny version is a bit silly, but maybe that’s what you’re feeling like. The time when you’re so happy you can barely see your eyes beyond just a sliver!

Creepy Lenny Face

( ͡⚆ل͜ ͡⚆)

Well isn’t that creepy of you Lenny. No one needs a creep but sometimes you need to tell someone they’re being a creep and, well, this is perfect.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: When you’ve seen something maybe you shouldn’t have or caught someone off guard. Only not creepy to use this when you’re not actually being a creep.

Lenny Face With Guns

̿̿ ̿̿ ̿̿ ̿’̿’\̵͇̿̿\з=( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°)=ε/̵͇̿̿/’̿̿ ̿ ̿ ̿ ̿ ̿

Here’s the real angry Lenny, or maybe he just wishes he were Clint Eastwood. “Nobody move, I’m going to grab the last slice of pizza and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Who Uses This Lenny Face: Hopefully anyone that uses this is doing so because they’re joking. No one’s actually pulling any guns out.

Lenny Face Table Flip

(╯ ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Sometimes you just need to flip the table, maybe it’s a frustrating game of monopoly that’s been going downhill for a while or a game of flip cup that you got a bit overzealous in.

Who Uses This Lenny Face: If you want to be the guy that says “F*ck it, I’m Out!” Whether you’re at a college frat party or a Bills Mafia tailgate. A table flip is always appropriate.

Cute Lenny Face

( ͡°- ͡°)

Great ending, on a cute Lenny with a little dimple nose. Feeling cute? So is this Lenny!

Who Uses This Lenny Face: Well you better be either cute or someone with you is being cute. This isn’t the “I’m not very hungry so I’m going to just eat a leaf of salad” cute, it’s the “I’m a girl who just shotgunned a beer faster than the other guy” cute.

Here are a ton more lennies to choose from, pick your favorite!

The History And Meaning Of Lenny Face

The history of the Lenny Face began in 2012 in Finland on a message board called Ylilauta. The user was anonymous, perhaps his name was actually Lenny. The user posted the string of characters to make this now iconic face on a message board about spam on the forums.

The forum quickly devolved into people making Lenny variations to suit their current mood or liking. Like wildfire, Lenny spread throughout online forums like 4chan. The French renamed him “Le Lenny Face” but fewer people use that name. If you use text to speech translation the face is called “deg deg,” which is probably because the two eyes have degree symbols and it can’t read or pronounce the rest of the face. The use today is worldwide, with hundreds of Facebook pages dedicated to Lenny as well as Reddit threads, YouTube videos and turned into a variety of memes.

The Lenny face text itself is written using Unicode, a sort of rosetta stone for computers that allow any computer, iPhone, Android or another device to translate machine code (zeros and ones) into readable characters.

No one is entirely sure what the initial meaning of the Lenny Face was as the original creator is anonymous and didn’t provide any context around the face. Most likely, it is simply a cute looking face created from basic Unicode that every computer and smartphone has. In other words, every device should be able to create the Lenny Face with built-in technology.

Lenny Face In Pop Culture

As Lenny Face grew in popularity people began putting the face on hundreds of popular icons from Spongebob Squarepants to the famous Mona Lisa and The Scream painting.

Recently, there are some people adding a body to Lenny, which in our opinion doesn’t quite look right. The main reason is because people simply take the face and draw in a body by hand drawing it. One of the best parts of Lenny is that he’s created completely using Unicode characters which means it can be just copied and pasted on any device. If you draw in a body it doesn’t have the same effect, now it is a picture.

As it continues to grow in popularity people have added sunglasses, shirts, a dabbing Lenny and a whole host of other variations. Call me traditional but I’ve always preferred the original one to any other Lenny.

That wraps up our Lenny Face guide, hopefully it tickled your fancy just a bit and got you thinking of all kinds of new options for that next clever text with a friend.
