As with most creative platforms, TikTok rewards those that put in the necessary time and effort. Add great ideas to the mix and that’s where the magic happens.
Despite what you may think, there are certain trends in popular tiktok video that we can focus in on and replicate. I’m not saying copying tiktok videos, what I am saying is that we can use the underlying viral themes from these videos and modify them to fit your personality and style!
With that in mind, here are some great ideas to help your next Tik Tok video hit the top of the viral charts.
TikTok Ideas -- Let’s Get Viral
Idea 1: Most Importantly -- You Be You
I wanted to start off with this because there is something I see in every popular Tiktok user, you know, those ones with over a million followers. These accounts feature people who let their true selves shine through. As a watcher of the video, if you feel like you get a sense of who that person is, you will instinctually connect with them.
Don’t believe me? Here’s a research study showing that emotional vulnerability is how we as humans make connections! Thus, our most important advice YOU BE YOU.
If you’re sad, show it, if you’re happy, show it, if you’re frustrated, show it, if you’re nervous about taking a new step (See video 👇), show it. That’s how we build connections and while synchronized dancing Tiktok is always popular, the viewer is NOT building a connection with you.
Idea 2: Be Timely -- Know what’s popular or in season today
It’s that time of year, Pumpkin Spice latte craze is upon us and in many ways that triggers the “feeling” of fall in us and all the things that entails. Starbuck’s was brilliant in developing the PSL. Why has it become so popular? It gives us an emotional response that a black cup of coffee never will.

Fall is approaching, which means a great idea is to capitalize on the fall season. The warm drinks, cool and crisp nights, changing colors, and all the feelings associated with the start of “nesting season.”
In addition, as Christmas will be here in a few months it’s not a bad idea to come up with some outlines or thoughts on videos. For example, you could take some of the iconic Christmas or winter movies like Elf or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and remake some scenes into TikTok videos.
Idea 3: Do The Hard Work Other TikTok Users Won’t
TikTok user Maddi Winter has on her profile that she spends over 10 hours editing every TikTok video. The result, epically awesome videos that show her talent. She’s at the top of TikTok when it comes to users who specialize in visually editing and adding elements to her videos. Tik Tok, in particular, has some pretty sophisticated video editing tools that you don’t normally see in other similar apps.
That’s not to say you need to use her style, your videos can have limited edits, but you still need to do the hard work. Your 10th video will be better than your first, 100th better than your 10th. The more you do something, the more you fail and put in the hard work, the more your talents will grow. That makes better tiktok videos and ups your chance of hitting it big!
You look at famous athletes and every one of them will tell you they got there from hard work, early mornings, late nights and endless hours training. This is no different, if you want to be the Lebron James of TikTok you will need to put in the hours necessary.

Idea 4: Dig Into The Archives
There have been smart people working in entertainment for centuries. Many of those have struck gold, something that has mass appeal and instantly becomes a “classic.” If you’re struggling to come up with ideas for new videos, look back into the past to see what types of things have been popular. Some people like to say that nothing goes away on the internet, but is just repackaged and repurposed.
Are you a romantic at heart? Spend the day watching classic romance movies and find scenes that really hit home. Use that as a basis for a new tiktok video and you’re starting off on a great foot.
Need an example? Let’s dig into a perfect example!
Here’s an iconic clip of Heath Ledger from 10 Things I Hate About You. Watch it all the way through and tell me you don’t get that warm fuzzy feeling as Heath Ledger sings Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.”
Now, watch this TikTok video by Keira Boyle that recently got 1.3 million views! Notice any similarities? While they’re not the exact same, the idea behind them is similar. A romantic gesture, a romantic song, a football field, love, and the act of telling your significant other you love them in front of a bunch of people.
Just the right amount of similarity to tap into the magic the original video above had. The result? 1.3 million views on the video when Keira typically has less than 10k views on her videos!
Idea 5: Capture Something Noteworthy
People’s lives aren’t always awesome. Instagram users often want to show their life in the best light possible, they tend to share images when they’re doing something special. The reason is because people want to see out of the ordinary or noteworthy events.
A quick way to bore people is to share a video of you eating Frosted Flakes for the millionth time for breakfast. So when you’re coming up with an idea, make sure it is based around something that is out of the ordinary.
A prank, heroic moment, romantic gesture, unusual place or event, all of these add an interesting tweak to your video that will help it go viral. Why do people go to the movies? To be swept away into a make-believe place, do that for 15 seconds on TikTok and you’re bound to have a hit!
Here’s an example for you: Epic view from the top of a cruise ship, showing a beautiful ocean in the background, synchronized divers performing and a huge audience that’s loving it. How much of the video below is Frosted Flakes in the morning? None
Idea 6: Movement Is Key
Going viral on Tik Tok is a bit different than other platforms. Unlike YouTube, which can handle long-form videos with a lot of exposition, Tik Tok clips are short, sweet, and to the point. You don’t have time to deliver a monologue to the camera, so your videos involve a lot of exaggerated movements and actions.
There is some good evidence backing up this point too. If you take a look at the most popular Tik Tok clips trending, most involve little talking and a lot of movement. If you want to capture viewers’ attention, standing still like a statue is most certainly a bad idea.
In fact, it seems that the wackiest and wildest videos are the ones the hit the top of the viral charts. this is one reason why dance videos are so popular on the platform. Movement can express what words cannot, and a single gesture often communicates more than spoken words.
Idea 7: Release Regular Content
Sometimes a channel can explode in popularity because of just a single video. Some users strike gold once and get a massive amount of views on one of their videos, but the rest of their channel looks bare in comparison. This guy’s channel is a perfect example of what we are talking about. He has a lot of videos, but one of them has millions of views compared to a couple of hundred views on others.
This is not the norm though. Most people who go viral try at it again and again until they finally make something that takes off. It’s a simple law of numbers: the more videos you make, the more likely it is one of them will go viral. The top content creators on the platform can release dozens of videos a day, each one being a good opportunity to go viral.
So if you really want things to take off, you need to put your nose to the grindstone and get out a regular stream of content. If a video does poorly one day, it’s no big deal. You will have tons of other opportunities to hit the viral charts.
That wraps up our TikTok ideas that are bound to get you from ordinary to viral level. You don’t need to use these ideas but combining one or multiple of these will boost the chances the video gets super popular. Who knows; maybe one of these ideas will be the key to your video hitting it big.
